PORS#06 Mount St. Helens / 9 Hours
Few people can forget where they were on May 18th, 1980 - the day Mt. St. Helens literally blew her top. The mountains' violent eruption wreaked incomprehensible devastation to the area and affected weather patterns for months. With the Mountain 'in the news', now is the time to visit this awesome spectacle! Mount St. Helens literally explodes before your very eyes! The roar of the greatest volcanic eruption in American history shakes your theater seat. At the Mount St. Helens Cinedome Theater, this is just the beginning of your adventure! At the Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center, one gains the first full panoramic view of Mount St. Helens. The Memorial Grove offers contemplative views. Enjoy a wonderful BBQ lunch, complete with all the trimmings, at the Hoffstaft Bluffs restaurant. At the Forest Learning Center, you will see the Eruption Chamber and learn about recovery, reforestation and conservation. Following the Toutle River, you'll enter the blast zone and see the remains of the blown down timber, avalanche debris and mud flow. The Johnston Ridge Visitors Center brings you closest to the crater itself. Seeing the mountain and the devastation up close and personal is altogether different than watching a television documentary. The Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center overlooks the Upper Toutle River. Here you will see the crater and lava dome. With the absolute destruction of this area, Nature is proving her remarkable ability to survive. You will see vegetation and wildlife in these areas. It started with small plants and creatures. Now, you'll see young trees and elk. Even though it is a slow comeback, and the topography is forever altered, it is still a comeback. Departs: Sat
